Grandma’s Old Wooden Furniture is Much Prized Today

One of the more pleasurable aspects of idling around a grandma’s house on a day off or when visiting on that annual pilgrimage before Christmas is the old wooden furniture so many of these seniors in our lives used to live with.  Running a finger along the wooden bench in the dining room, or that old church pew they always had in the parlour.  Our ancient folk really appreciated the value of old wooden furniture be it oak, maple, walnut ash, the aroma, look and feel of real wood takes some surpassing.  Admitedly it could well have been the painted brown by the ttime we started running arond and climbing all over it.  Upstairs in the bedrooms there was alway that dark brown wardrobe with matching tallboy – anything but.  Why oh why did they call the little guy next to the wardrobe a tall boy?  Inside was generally a generous front to back hanging space, slightly offset to the non door opening side.  Then there were shelves on one side of the tallbboy, for underwear, sports gear and everyday items like belts and wallets that don’t need muc space but can get lost if not put away overnight.

If the old house had a nursery, that would have housed some lovely small pieces for the mother and her entourage – but the nursing or rocking chair always reigned supreme.  There is one in a house near me, The rocker was recomended bycause of its sturday but inexpensive cost.  The plush velour covered ones with high winged back and their matching steel, or ottoman as they are sometimes referred to are supremely comfortable and help very much to get the right vibes and rythm when feeding a new born!
